The Discovery-class is the latest model in the line of advanced explorer vessels Starfleet is putting out. Design work began on the class at about the same time as the original Excalibur-class but some of the design requirements out-paced technology of the time.
With recent advances in slipstream and warp field technology, designs for the Discovery-class were finalized and the ship was put into production.

Quantite Fusion Warp Core
The class is equipped with the same Quantite Fusion Warp Core that was first installed on the refit Excalibur-class, another large explorer type ship.
Like on the Excalibur-class, the four cores put out a significant warp signature which is difficult if not impossible to mask.
This issue is mitigated somewhat by new warp coil designs and a modified warp field geometry.
Due to the four core configuration, engineers can re-distribute power from any core at any time and even leave two cores in a hot standby mode for quick activation.
Under normal conditions the ship can operate on a single core at full capacity but would be limited to low warp speeds even with non-essential systems disabled.
The Discovery class is equipped with a new model of the Starfleet Quantum Slipstream Generator. This model is designed specifically to propel a ship as large as the Discovery class through a slipstream tunnel.
As a result of the power requirements the drive cannot be used on any standard starship and requires at a minimum all four cores of the warp core to be operating at 50% of capacity; or two cores operating at 100% capacity.
Another limitation of the design which is mostly attributed to the mass of the starship is the recommended limit of 3-5 days straight travel through slipstream. Any longer could risk damage to the drive, or to the ship if the tunnel should collapse.
The Discovery-class has a total of four impulse engines which are each powered by large fusion reactors.
The additional impulse engines over the previous explorer type ship (Excalibur-class) provides the Discovery-class with much improved acceleration.
The Discovery-class is equipped with a total of 22 phaser arrays of Type XIIa which provides the class with potential firepower equivalent to a small starbase.
The size and power of the phaser arrays make them unsuitable for targeting small, fast moving hostile ships such as fighters and escorts which is why the phaser power on the ship is supplemented by point defense pulse phasers and a fighter squadron.
The Discovery-class has one of the highest number of torpedo launchers of Starfleet vessels in service today.
The ship has eight total forward launchers, two of which are situated on deck 6 above the fighter launch tubes and the remaining six are on deck 17 above the main deflector.
The four aft torpedo tubes are located on deck 22 on the underside of the secondary hull.
All torpedo launchers on the Discovery-class are the standard pulse fire tubes (1/second). It was deemed unnecessary to equip the class with a rapid fire tube given the large number of planned individual launchers.

The shields of the Discovery-class, like most starfleet ships of the time, are capable of auto-modulating themselves to adjust to incoming weapons fire to provide the maximum amount of protection.
Point Defense Pulse Phasers
As a new addition to the design of Starfleet vessels, the Discovery has an assortment of point Defense Pulse Phasers. These are a variation on the rapid fire pulse phaser cannons developed for the Defiant-class escort. Each pulse phaser unit is comprised of two cannons and there are normally at least two units on each emplacement.
Each bank of pulse phasers has its own tracking and targeting array that allows it to operate independently of the primary tactical systems if desired. This allows the Tactical officer to focus the main weapons on larger targets while the point defense system picks off smaller craft such as fighters and escorts or incoming ordinance that threatens key areas.
Key areas covered by the point defense system include decks 1 & 2, the forward fighter launch tubes and both shuttle bays.
Like most Starfleet ships of the 25th century, the Discovery-class is outfitted with a layer of Ablative hull armor on the hull which would disintegrate at a controlled rate when under directed energy blasts should shields fail.
The Discovery-class runs the main computer off three cores located throughout the ship. Each core is capable of running the entire ship should the others be offline or damaged in some way.
When the ship and crew are fully committed to exploration and scientific inquiry, two of the cores can be in full operation; one to continue running regular ship operations, and the other dedicated to any and all analysis and cataloguing of whatever scientific data the crew needs.
The computer network runs on bio-neural circuitry like all modern Starfleet vessels. This latest version is up to 2x faster than the technology first implemented on the Intrepid-class in the 2370s.
Like most Starfleet vessels, the Discovery-class has numerous holodecks to provide any environment desired for leisure, recreation or training purposes.
What is perhaps unique to the class are a set of smaller holodecks on deck 3 near main sickbay that are at the sole use of the medical staff to provide any environment necessary to rehabilitate members of the crew from serious injury.
The Discovery-class also has a set of seven holographic staterooms to provide a perfectly suited environment for visiting diplomats from any possible species or culture.
Primary sickbay facilities are all located on deck 3 of the primary hull.
Main sickbay itself contains 122 standard biobeds plus two top of the line surgical bays.
Across from main sickbay are five non-critical patient rooms which have 13 biobeds each where medical staff can monitor patients who's lives re not in immediate danger.
Not far from main sickbay and the non-critical patient rooms are four group containment rooms, each with four biobeds and other seating where medical staff can quarantine crew members from the rest of the ship.
The rest of deck 3 is littered with medical offices, fleet and civilian medical labs, medical storage, lecture halls and conference rooms.
The Discovery-class carries a complement of 60 Type 14 shuttles, ten of which are custom outfitted with the latest in scientific equipment.
The ship also carries a group of five type 19 cargo shuttles that can be used for independent restocking of foodstuffs and equipment if transporters are not feasible.
In total there are six of the basic Gryphon class and two of the Stormcrow variant which has heavier armament and is intended for use in combat situations.
To support the marine company stationed aboard the Discovery-class also carries two transport ships for troop deployment on a large scale to a planet or base.
It also carries a squadron of 20 AC-304 Phantom strike fighters with an additional 10 in reserve. The fighters are meant to provide defense of smaller hostile craft that the primary weapons of the Discovery-class may be too slow to track and to provide a combat air patrol in areas where sensors may be inhibited.
Currently the only commissioned starship of this class is the USS Vindicator.
