The History of Starfleet Academy

The Academy is one of the oldest institutions of Starfleet and has been an essential element of the fleet since its inception. It is the Academy that brings the values and principles of the United Federation of Planets alive in Starfleet's officers and it is this institution that has established Starfleet as the most skilled and professional military and exploratory force in known space.

The Early Years: United Earth Starfleet Academy 2050

The real history of the Academy dates back to before the foundation of the Federation to its roots on Earth. Prior to 2161 when the Federation was founded and its Starfleet Headquarters was established in San Francisco on Earth, the city played host to the headquarters for the United Earth Starfleet. Alongside the United Earth Starfleet Headquarters was the United Earth Starfleet Academy which was a combined training institution for all of the military departments that had helped to build Earth's space going military. The giant complex housing both the Headquarters and the Academy date back to the early 21st century. Throughout the first half of the 22nd century the Academy grew in independence from the individual military departments of the nations of the Earth that had formed it and it became a unique training school for the pioneers of space exploration and the defense of Earth's space interests.

By 2153 when NX-01 Enterprise Earth's first warp 5 capable starship was launched the Academy was well regarded as the finest training institution on Earth and had become a center of excellence, bringing educators and researchers from many of the friendly worlds that Earth had encountered. In the late 2150's when Earth entered into the Earth-Romulan War the military training of the Academy was given its ultimate test. While the war was devastating on both sides, Earth emerged the victor in 2160 and the excellent training of Earth's Starfleet officers was cited as a contributing factor to the victory. The following year, in 2161, the United Earth joined the new United Federation of Planets and its Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy were chosen to be the center of the new Federation Starfleet.

The 23rd and 24th Centuries

As the Federation and Starfleet grew, so did Starfleet Academy. While the Academy continued to be housed on Earth in its original buildings, new facilities associated with it opened on many of the Federation's worlds. An area around Mars became come to the Academy Flight Range where students would learn the skills of tactical flight, students would also regularly use training vessels around the general area of the Sol System. The planet of Danula II became home to the Academy's annual marathon as well as other training activities. Other planets such as Relva VII also began to house small Academy complexes that among other things would perform entrance tests on new applicants.

In 2393 Starfleet Academy suffered one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in Earth's history when a group known as the League for Freedom, demonstrating against the UGAP project exploded a bomb in the complex killing over eight hundred Cadets and lecturers and wounding many more. Following the attack Starfleet Academy operations were spread about the other smaller campuses already in existance while a major rebuilding programme was undertaken on the main campus in San Francisco. Two years later Starfleet Academy, San Francisco reopened but with a far smaller number of students due to the natural growth in the other campuses during its down time. With the establishment of UGAP's heir, UCIP, of which the Federation became a member, Starfleet Academy began to build a new campus as part of a combined UCIP Academy. This combined Academy was established on Honegah part of the Xenoride System.

A New Starfleet Academy

In 2397 the decision was taken to move the primary operations of Starfleet Academy from Earth to Honegah to more fully support the training needs of the whole of UCIP. The Academy complex in San Francisco was reduced to administrative work for Starfleet while the Starfleet Academy complex at UCIP Academy was expanded to cover all areas of operations. The following year, in 2398, dual operations were reintroduced at the San Francisco complex following a mass of political problems involving the UCIP members. The decision was taken to return the bulk of Starfleet Academy duties to Earth whilst still continuing joint UCIP training on Honegah.

In 2410 Starfleet moved the Academy back to its original site in Presido Park, San Francisco across San Francisco Bay from Federation and Starfleet Headquarters. In the Triad War (2412-2413) Cardassia attacked Earth, destroying major cities and Federation facilties including The Federation Headquarters in Paris & Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco & Starfleet Academy. With the help of Federation engineers, Academy Faculty, Cadets, and Alumni Starfleet Academy was quickly rebuilt including a new library donated by the Pike Family Foundation and named in Admiral Christopher Pike's honor. There are satelight Academy campi and training units on many worlds and starbases throughout the Universe.

Becoming a Starfleet Academy Cadet

It was no easy feat to become a Starfleet Cadet. Applicants had to be at least 17 years of age and no older than 23, meet citizenship, physical, and educational requirements, then through Nomination Process. Cadet Candidates had take the Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam. Once Cadet Candidates passed the SFA-Entrance Exam the Cadet Candidate became a Cadet level 4 and began a four year course of study and takes Starfleet Oath. In the third year the Cadet was now Cadet level 2, their studies continued at their assigned post. In their last year of study, the Cadet was now a Cadet level 1. Upon graduating the Cadet was promoted to Ensign and would continue on in her assigned post.

Starfleet Academy provided education for Enlisted crewmen & Non-Commissioned Officers. Enlisted Applicants or Inductees had to be at least 17 years of age no older than 23. Meet citizenship, physical and educational requirements. Their rank was Crewman3 as they began basic training and short courses then assigned to their posts. Ongoing education is offered to those who wish to further their Starfleet Career. Senior Officer Training is offered to NCO's.

It is important to note that All Academy Applicants no longer have to complete the Traditional education program. Once accepted to the Academy, cadets are often assigned posts and complete their education in the field. They do have contact with intructors both at the Academy and in the field.

Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam

A Starfleet Academy entrance exam had to be taken before someone could enter Starfleet Academy. One of the exam facilities was on Relva VII. Federation citizens could apply for this test. After they had completed this preliminary test, they might be chosen to do the actual entrance exam. For non-Federation citizens it was also possible to do the entrance exam, however their request needed to be backed by a letter of reference from a command level Starfleet Officer. (Nog became a Starfleet cadet with the backing of Commander Benjamin Sisko.) The exam itself was designed to look for certain qualities a person displayed, including: integrity, intelligence, courage, imagination, and leadership qualities. Candidates were told to expect the unexpected during this exam.

The entrance exam was made up of the following tests: • Dynamic relationship test - a spinning 3D cube consisting of a grid of blue dots in 6 • 6 • 6 a configuration, totaling 216 individual points. Surrounding the cube were 216 red dots flying around in a seemingly random pattern. To complete this test each of the red dots must match up with a blue dot. The solution required discovering the appropriate rotation factor and vector coordinates. • Hyperspace physics test - among others, it featured a trick question: "If the matter and antimatter tanks on a Galaxy Class starship are nine-tenths depleted, calculate the intermix ratio necessary to reach a starbase one hundred light years away at warp factor 8." It was a trick question because there is only one matter/antimatter intermix ratio, that being one to one. • Psych test - this test allowed the candidate face his or her deepest fears. The test itself was tuned to the experiences of the candidate. Wesley Crusher found this section of the test the most difficult and fearsome. • Other cultures and species test - not always announced in advance, it had the purpose to test the candidate how he or she reacted when a member of another species was encountered. The reaction of the candidate was important. • Carlundrum IQ test - here the candidate had to predict the variable patterns of platonic solids. The response time was important. • Note: The flux coordinating sensor was part of the apparatus on which the candidates performed some of the tests.
