The Nova class starship is an advanced scientific research vessel designed for the varied needs of Starfleet within the fields of long term survey and research missions as well as advance scouting for exploration vessels.

History

The Nova class is a scientific survey vessel designed to be the direct replacement of the Oberth class starship. The Oberth class had served Starfleet for well over one hundred years when it was decided to finally design a replacement that would be more easily upgradeable and be able to house the most up to date technology.

While the Nova class is comestically very different to the Oberth class its mission role and capabilities are very similar. The crew accomodation on the more modern ship provides more comfort and the ship can travel faster, but the design is still aimed at survey and science missions rather than the broader requirements of the Federation's exploratory, diplomatics and defensive missions.

The first Nova class vessel, the USS Nova, launched from the Andorian Imperial Ship Yards in 2369 and was quickly followed by many more as most of the Oberth class fleet was mothballed to be replaced by Nova class starships.

Detailed Technical Information

Spaceframe

The Nova class is a compact but well rounded vessel that is based on the common Starfleet configuration of primary hull, secondary hull and two warp nacelles.

At 165m in length, the Nova class is slightly shorter than an Intrepid class but longer than a Defiant class.

Propulsion Systems

The Nova class was principly designed to be able to survive on its own for extended periods whilst moving slowly in areas it is charting. For this reason it is not built to support extremely high speeds for long periods of time.

The ship is powered primarily by a standard matter/antimatter reaction assembly that is most commonly an F-Type M/ARA. This provides primary power for the ship as well as for warp propulsion.

When cruising the ship can comfortably travel at Warp 6 for extended periods of time and due to advances in the standard fitted M/ARA from earlier vessels, can do so without causing subspace damage that had been observed with less advanced warp drive systems. The system can easily support maximum speeds of warp 8.2 for variable lengths of time and in emergencies can carry the vessel at warp 9.4 before overheating and automatically shutting down after two hours.

Two standard fusion generators power the impulse drive of the ship that is comparable in capability to all other modern starships. Due to the small size of the vessel, it is extremely nimble at sublight speeds and can reach sublight velocities of 0.7c for short periods of time under normal use. An emergency maximum speed of 0.9c is possible for very limited periods but is likely to cause significant structural weakening and possibly even burn out the primary SIF (Structural Integrity Field) or IDS (Inertial Damping System), so should be used with extreme caution.

Defensive Systems

The Nova class is not designed as a warship or to be a front line defense vessel for the Federation. Due to its size and the requirements of fitting the necessary equipment for its mission role into its spaceframe, the Nova class has very limited defensive systems but still has the capability to quite reasonably defend itself in the field from light to medium threats.

The most important element of the ship's defensive systems is the tactical deflector system. It is expected that in most circumstances the defensive tactics used by the Nova class would be to defend itself from an initial attack whilst fleeing to a safe location. The powerful defensive shield system on board the ship allows for this as well as for the ship to be reasonably well protected in any potential battle situation.

In a situation where offensive systems are required the ship is outfitted with both beam type weapons and torpedoes. The six type-IX phaser arrays are the primary weapon of the ship and are extremely powerful for a vessel of its size, as a secondary weapons system, that provides additional useful weapons capability at warp speeds, the ship is fitted with two quantum torpedo launchers and carries fifty-five torpedo shells.

Computer Systems

Due to its small size the Nova class only carries one computer core, a V-109 core. It is based on now superceded isolinear technology, but due to the limited requests that are generally made due to the ship's limited number of personnel, this does not cause significant problems under routine use.

Medical & Science Systems

Due to the small size of the ship, the Nova class has limited capacity for medical treatment but does carry state of the arts medical equipment and facilities. The small sickbay is well equipped to deal with medical issues from the minor to the life threatening and the area is equipped with a Mark 1 EMH for short term medical support.

As a science vessel, the ship carries incredibly sophisticated scientific systems for its size, including sixteen laboratory spaces (which in emergencies could be used as secondary medical facilites).

Other Systems

The Nova class carries a specialist support vessel called a Waverider Shuttle that is used specifically for within planetary atmospheres as a survey, reconnaissance and transport vehicle. It is capable of transporting six personnel (three of whom crew the shuttle) at sublight speeds within a planetary atmosphere and in orbit. Rather than landing in a shuttle bay, the craft docks directly in a port on the exterior of the ship and is connected by hard umbilical.

The Rhode Island variant of the Nova-class starship is the latest iteration of the class for the 25th century. Like its predecesor, this class is primarily a science vessel.

In addition to the traditional science duties of the class, several ships have been utilized in a scouting capacity.
