The Judge Advocate General's Corps of Starfleet also known as the "JAG Corps" or "JAG" is the legal arm of Starfleet.The corps consists of a galactic organization of more than 1460 Judge Advocates, 60 limited duty officers (law), 1000 enlisted members and nearly 275 civilian personnel, serving under the direction of the Judge Advocate General of Starfleet.
The headquarters of the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the Starfleet is located at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
Starfleet Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School
The Starfleet Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School educates military and civilian in legal and leadership skills.
Since 2161, the center has been ran by Starfleet and is located in Norfolk, Virginia. The Judge Advocate General's School, the center's graduate-level division, is accredited by the Federation Bar Association to award the Master of Laws degree in Military Law. It also includes courses in Administrative and Civil Law, Contract and Fiscal Law, Criminal Law, and International and Operational Law.
Judge Advocate General of Starfleet
The Judge Advocate General of Starfleet (JAG) and the Deputy Judge Advocate General of Starfleet (DJAG) are appointed positions. They are both nominated by the President with the advice of the Commander, Starfleet and the Chief of Staff of Starfleet, and must be confirmed via majority vote by the Admiralty Board of Starfleet.
The JAG and DJAG are appointed to a four year term of office, but historically been officers in the service of Starfleet. However their is a statute that allows Marine officer to be appointed to either position as long as he or she meets the requirements stated in the section.
