Spiers was kicked around all his life. Growing up as the bastard offspring of Charles Spiers to a woman who resented his very existence, Ronald grew up with his uncle Albert, who only saw Ronald as a real drain on his time and effort. As a result, he didn't have a happy childhood.
As soon as he was able, he was shipped off to the marine corps boot camp, where he averaged. Although a bright and studious student, never really broke out of the middle of the pack in boot. Assigned to basic infantry traning, as wasn't really considered bright enough for specialist training, he found that he applied himself more.
After spending a few years, and reaching the end of his enlistment, he was offered a chance to apply for OCS. At 20, and already having had four years experience, and being a Corporal, he found that he wanted the challenge. Accepting OCS was the best decision Ronald ever made. Once there, he was able to apply himself where before at boot, he'd been unable to do so. Exempt from the PT and basic traning aspects of the officer training, he was able to knuckle down on the theory side, and rocked out at the end of his 2 year training 11th in his class.
As a fully commissioned Second Lieutenant, young Spiers went out into the wide universe to prove himself. This he did time and time again during various minor conflicts and skirmishes, earning himself distinctions for valour and bravery many times. So much so, that after only one year as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was put forward for his silver bars, and recieved them about three months after being nominated.
As a 1st Lieutenant, he was firmly a platoon leader, but also found himself being kicked around into other positions as they came around. He hated administrative roles, and resented his time on Battalion staff, so much so he was kicked off the staff for excessive bad behaviour.
At this point in his career, he seemed destined to stay as a 1Lt, but for every misconduct report, he recieved three commendations for comspicious gallentry and heroism. Finally, he was promoted to Captain, and given command of a company in a back water garrison. The reason behind this decision wasn't all out of spite, but to see if he could actually do the job of being a marine where combat wasn't always the case.
Well, he did, suprisingly. He turned one of the worst performing company's in the 9th Division into one of the best scoring, on all aspects. He proved he was not only a capable field commander, but an outstanding garrison commander too.
Having resented having to prove himself, he requested a front line posting, as soon as one became available, and he grabbed one of the new company vacancies going in the 5th MEU.
